foofoofoo

foofoofoo is an MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer 3 smasher shell script. That means the script will create a single MP3 file out of mini-chunks of all MP3 files in your hard drive(s). It looks for MP3 files, copies a tiny bit of every one it finds on its way and appends them all together in a single file.

foofoofoo is another step in Alku's neverending adventure in data transformation. The script actually treats MP3 audio as text, so it’s pretty simple to perform some sed command to copy the chunks from the original files to the resulting foofoofoo track.

It was written and extensively tested on Mac OS X, but foofoofoo is actually a shell script, which means it should also work on other Unix-based boxes. So far only Linux has been tested, but we’d like to hear from IRIX, Solaris or others. The standard downloadable file is packaged for OS X-friendly use (a package installer file), so Linux (or other UNIX flavours users) should get the fooUNIX.tar file and follow the install instructions in there.

If you use foofoofoo and want to share the results, please let us know. email roc at imbecil dot net.

foofoofoo is licensed under the GNU GPL, so free, as in freedom. Some people have already manipulated it for their needs or for plain fun. Let us know if you do that, we’d like to see how the baby grows. Please read the GNU GPL terms for more information.

foofoofoo is an Imbécil / Alku project, kindly hosted at Openserver by the wonderful people at Platoniq.
