PerMagnus Lindborg
(Sweden / Norway 1968)
Lindborg first studied piano performance with Kerstin Nylander in Sweden. He then turned to composition, studying with Olav Anton Thommessen in Norway and Klas Torstensson in Holland. He holds a Candidatus Magisterii degree in Composition from the Norwegian State Academy of Music (1995) and a diploma from the Cursus in Computing and Composition from IRCAM (1999). He is currently teaching electroacoustic music composition at l’Ecole nationale de musique in Montbéliard, France (Cursus de composition).
Of Swedish origin, Lindborg started his professional activities in Norway and became a member of the Society of Norwegian Composers in 1996. His output includes work for soloists, vocalists, ensembles and interactive electronics, and is published by the Norwegian Music Information Centre. He was the awardee of the Young Artist Grant of the Norwegian Cultural Ministry in 1998 and again in 1999.
Lindborg collaborates with musicians in France, Germany, Sweden, England, Norway, Holland and elsewhere. His music has been presented in Europe, America and Asia at major festivals such as Ars Musica (Brussels), Agora (Paris), Ultima (Oslo), Focus (New York), Nordic Music Days (Stockholm) and the Autumn Festival (Warszawa), as well as collaborating with Joyce Bee Tuan Koh in her “Project Time” for the Singapore Arts Festival in 2000.
With the sinfonietta piece “Nermal SonoSofisms”, Lindborg was the winner of the Audience Price (Prix du Public) at the FORUM 96 in Montreal. The music and dance performance “Extra Quality #2” integrating composed and computer electronics with instruments played by the dancers, was produced at IRCAM and premiered at Centre George Pompidou in June 2002. The orchestra piece “khreia”, winning entry at the Nordic Composers’ Competition 2002, was performed in October 2002 by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and Zsolt Nagy. The first of the family of “!SonoSofism” pieces, “Bombastic !SonoSofisms” for solo accordion, recorded by Frode Haltli, is released on ECM Records #1794.
2003 saw the first performances of “Extra Quality Excerpts” at the Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival and “le mer, le plateau”, a music- and dance performance in Paris. Forthcoming events include a publication of a pedagogical work for piano and electronics in September 2003 by the British Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music “Spectrum” series, and an invitation to participate in the “D!sturbances” workshop Charlottenborg Exhibition Hall in Copenhagen in June 2003.
Commissions for 2006 include: “measure twice, cut once” for chamber orchestra for Ensemble Ernst to be premiered at the Ultima festival in Oslo; a project with Syntono for two percussion, two piano and electronics in France; “kantele trio” for kantele, violin and cello for the Finnish festival curated by Asko Hyvärinen.
