Anthony Saunders has been involved with improvisational electronic music since 1995, when he was a regular member of a weekly experimental radio show at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. After years of using analog synths, modified 8-track tape decks and circuit bent boom boxes, Anthony began to incorporate his Macintosh Performa 6500/225 computer into the mix as a recording device and simple effect processor in tandem with a basic four track; after upgrading to a 500mhz g3 iBook in 2001, the creative possibilities of interactive computer music became the focus, exploring territory common to microsound, ambient, concrete/tape music and harsh noise, using a mixture of self-made Max/MSP patches, guitar pedals, voice, field recordings, and a wide range of commercially available audio software. Coming full circle, his recent live performances have eschewed the laptop in favor of a pile of guitar pedals and contact mic’ed junk metal.
2005 witnessed the launch of a series of limited cd-r releases, including a full length release on Japanese experimental music label Alienation and another on American noise label Troniks.
In addition to the solo work, Anthony was co-founder of “laptop metal” grindcore band Dataclast, formed in 1999, with releases on Discos Al Pacino, Crucial Blast, Slap-A-Ham, and 9 songs set to appear on a compilation of drum machine metal on Relapse Records. After writing more than 120 songs in 4 years, Dataclast is on a semi-permanent hiatus. In issue #114, Terrorizer magazine called Dataclast “the most innovative and unique happening in years.”
